Event description

Description

ADU+YOU is a hands-on, multi-session course carefully designed to help you understand why building an ADU may be a smart decision. You can have one sooner than you might think.

Every ADU has its own story about why someone dreamed, decided, solved the money puzzle, then built. If you know what is most important to you before you commit to build, you save money, headaches, and, best of all, time. This course is for practical people like you who are wondering, thinking, or planning for their future, that of family and friends, and who care about their community.

What does the course cost?

The series is eight sessions, meeting about every one to two weeks over a three-month period with ample wiggle room for any holidays. The early bird rate is $300 per month or $900 total (3 x $300); the discounted rate is $375 per month (total $1,125); regular tuition is $445 per month (total $1,335). We have been told by professional architects and experienced builders the price for this course is low given the topics covered and activities completed as homework.

Will I save money with the builder or architect if I take this course?

Probably. We have to say that every situation will be a bit different. We intentionally built this course to enable you to begin work with building professionals with a lot of your preliminary work completed. Normally, building professionals would need to spend a great deal of time helping you understand how they work, the design process, your decision choices, and the costs of your choices. We’re guessing that you might save at least the cost of the course, but likely multiple times that amount. That doesn’t count the time saved; that’s valuable too.

FAQs

Can my spouse, partner, parents, or significant other attend too?

Yes, a second person connected with the project may attend but one person must commit to attending all the sessions for continuity. If the second attendee won’t be attending every session, we ask they be respectful of other’s past participation and completed homework by not asking questions about material covered in earlier sessions. Of course, after class, instructors would be glad to follow up.What to expect

What can I expect?

Together with a cohort of 8-10 other individuals or couples, we’ll work through a series of exercises, reflections, and conversations to solidify your intentions and empower you to move forward. In our experience, investing time and energy to establish goals and intentions early in the process saves time and money in the long-run.

We will have guest experts ready to address your questions. They include owners, builders, bankers, and architects.

When will we meet?

The date of first session is AUGUST 27

We want to make the times work for everyone, so don’t let a scheduling conflict get in your way. We will set later sessions based on the schedules of participants so bring your calendar to the first session.

Note: if you can't make the first session but want to do the course, call us and we can make some special arrangements for you.

We will meet weekday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. approximately over a three month period at a convenient location in northeast Portland. We also plan at least one weekend day visiting ADUs and meeting with their owner/builders.

What's the refund policy?

In regard to the August start date, if we do not reach a minimum number of participants, refunds or credits to a future course will be offered, at your discretion.

Once the course date is confirmed this policy will apply: To maximize the amount of personalized interaction, the number of program participants will be limited. Prospective participants may be turned away because the program is full and, as a result, participant agrees to pay the full amount of the program tuition. Extenuating circumstances, as judged by the Program Instructor, will be the only reason this commitment will be released. Non-attendance at sessions will not be a cause for refunds. Program Participant agrees to pay program fees in a timely manner. If the participant’s status changes (e.g., new job out of area, personal emergency, etc.) the participant may substitute someone else with written program instructor permission.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket?

No printed ticket is required.
