ADULT SPELLING BEE & UGLY SWEATER CONTEST FUNDRAISER

The Literacy Council of Kingsport is hosting an ADULT SPELLING BEE & UGLY SWEATER CONTEST fundraiser on Thursday, December 15th at Bays Mountain Brewing Company in Kingsport.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. The Ugly Sweater Contest begins at 6:30 p.m. and the Spelling Bee begins promptly at 7 p.m. ESHTA Egyptian Food Truck will be selling food at the event. 

The funds raised will be used to serve the literacy needs of the Greater Kingsport community. All proceeds benefit the free Adult & Youth Literacy programs provided by Literacy Council.

REGISTRATION

• $25/Individual Ticket purchase includes entry to the Spelling Bee as well as complimentary entry into the Ugly Sweater Contest. At tickets, select INDIVIDUAL SPELLER then proceed to payment.

  $5/Ugly Sweater Contestant purchase includes entry into the Ugly Sweater Contest only. At tickets, select UGLY SWEATER CONTESTANT ONLY then proceed to payment.

RULES

• 18 and older to play.

• No cell phones. Automatic disqualification.

• Spelling order is randomly assigned before the event starts.

• Each speller has 30 seconds to spell the word. No answers will be accepted after time limit has passed.  

• Once a speller starts to spell a word, the speller cannot change the letters once pronounced. Speller may start over provided letters and their sequence are not changed. 

• Speller can request pronouncer to repeat the word, definition or sentence within the 30 second time. If time lapses, the speller is eliminated. 

• Any disputes will be resolved by the judges. The decision of the judges is final.

GAMEPLAY: SINGLE-ERROR ELIMINATION ROUNDS

•  Each speller spells one word in each round.

• Pronouncer will pronounce the word, give its definition, use it in a sentence and pronounces the word again.

• Speller has 30 seconds to spell the word.

• If speller spells the word correctly, the speller will advance to the next round. 

• If speller spells the word incorrectly, the speller is eliminated. Speller may buy and use a 'PERK' to remain in contention.  

• Each round is over when all spellers have had an opportunity to spell a word and there are still at least two spellers left.

• If none of the spellers in a round spells a word correctly during that round, they will all remain in the competition for a new round, in the same order.

• If only one of the spellers remaining in the competition at the start of a round spells the word correctly during that round, that speller is given the opportunity to enter in a one-word Championship round. If the speller spells the Championship word correctly, the Bee is over and that person is the Champion.

• If the speller misspells the Championship word, all spellers from the previous round enter into the final Championship Round.

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

• As determined by the Bee organizers, the start of the “Championship Round” will be declared and all spellers remaining will be part of these rounds.

• The elimination process changes during the championship round.

• If one speller misspells a word, the next speller will have a chance to spell the same word.

• If the next speller spells it correctly, plus the next word on the judges’ list, the Bee is over and that person is the Champion.

• If the next speller misspells the original word or the second word they are given, the first speller is given the chance to spell the missed word.

• If the first speller spells that word correctly, plus the next word on the judges’ list, the Bee is over and that person is the Champion.

• If the first speller spells that word incorrectly, the cycle continues.

• A round is complete when both spellers spell a word incorrectly OR a speller wins the competition by spelling two words correctly.

PERKS

• REBUZZ - $5.00 per perk

          -Players can have a 2nd chance to respell a word.

          (Limited one per round. May be purchased before or during the game.)

• BUZZ OFF - $5.00 per perk

          -Players can pass on a word. These words are discarded and players are given a new word to spell.

         (Limited one per round. May be purchased before or during the game.)

• STINGER - $15.00

          -Players can purchase a white board/marker to write out their words for the entire game. Players will also have 1 minute to spell for the entire game. 

         (Must be purchased at the BEGINNING of game only.)

• RETURN TO THE HIVE - $25.00

           -Players who have been eliminated can buy back into the competition and enter into the Championship round. 

         (Must be purchased BEFORE START OF CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND.)

PRIZES

• Prizes, along with a free entry into the Fall 2019 LCK Spelldown, will be awarded for the Champion and Runner-Up.

What if I want to pay in person instead of online?

    If you are unable to pay online, you can register and pay in person by cash or check at the Literacy Council of Kingsport, located at 247 Broad Street, Suite #300-1 Kingsport, TN 37660. Same prices apply.
