Event description

Description

Decisions define us. This workshop examines the role of educational leaders (administrators and teachers) as they determine their values in making decisions and as they analyze their own decision-making mechanisms. Through the use of multi-media instruction, group discussions, and current case studies which illustrate ethical dilemmas, workshop participants will be able to: Increase awareness of: 1) professional codes of ethics, 2) the types and frequency of ethical and moral decisions educators face, regardless of role, and 3) the potentially marginalizing policies or practices that may be embedded in the educational system.

1. Increase awareness of: 1) professional codes of ethics, 2) the types and frequency of ethical and moral decisions educators face, regardless of role, and 3) the potentially marginalizing policies or practices that may be embedded in the educational system.
2. Reflect on the importance of acting ethically with integrity and fairness while building relationships that contribute to a positive school climate.
3. Consider the dilemmas that educational leaders face every day in negotiating the needs of the individual (teacher, student, and parent) with the requirements (laws, mores, and expectations) of the learning community, and the community at large.
4. Analyze the ethical and moral foundations of decisions and how those decisions and their subsequent consequences impact students, staff and families.
5. Recognize various ethical frameworks and perspectives on ethics in order to consider the development of a personal decision-making mechanism for assessing situations of value conflicts and arriving at solutions which promote the creation of a positive school climate.
