Course Objectives:
1. The “Opioid Epidemic”
2. Risks of abuse and addiction associated with opioids
3. Identify patients at risk for substance abuse
4. Side effects, addiction potential, safe storage and disposal of common prescription drugs
5. Symptoms of opioid overdose and appropriate measures to address it
6. Current safe pain management practices

Kirt E. Simmons earned his D.D.S. and a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, completed a residency in orthodontics and an NIH fellowship in craniofacial anomalies at the University of North Carolina, and then taught at Indiana University and the University of North Carolina fulltime for 10 years before becoming the first Director of Craniofacial Orthodontics at Arkansas Children's Hospital in 1997.

*This 3 hour course will complete the requirement of the prescribing course mandated by the AR State Board of Dental Examiners for license renewal.
