Presenters: Dr. Sarz Maxwell, Psychiatrist and Gail Gabbert, D.Min., LMFT, CRADC

Dr. Maxwell lectures and writes extensively about clinical aspects of harm reduction, addiction, and dual diagnosis. She has spoken and consulted worldwide, in Scotland, Wales, Slovakia, VietNam, and Cambodia; most recently she spent eighteen months working in New Zealand. In 2013 she returned to the US, to the underserved populations she’s always loved.

Dr. Gabbert has a Doctor of Ministry degree in Counseling from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and is licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist. She is certified as a Substance Abuse Counselor. Gail has maintained a private practice, Interactions Therapy Center, for over 20 years. She also works for Galena Clinic and has a special fondness for people in recovery from opiate medication or heroin addiction. She has specialized in Medication Assisted Treatment for twelve years.

Training Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of the disease of opiate dependence and how it differs from other substance addictions
  • Be familiar with evidence-based medication-assisted treatment for opioid dependence
  • Understand the proper uses of Methadone, Suboxone, and Vivitrol
  • Understand the roles of detoxification vs. maintenance therapy
  • Learn strategies to treat opiate-addicted people with mental health issues
  • Understand the role of the opioid substance abuse counselor in medication-assisted treatment
  • Be able to recognize opioid overdose in the community setting
  • Be trained in the administration of naloxone (Narcan) for reversal of opioid overdose

Training Goals:

  • Participants will become knowledgeable in the field of opioid addiction
  • Participants will become competent to treat this population of substance abusers, or to make appropriate referrals.
  • Participants will be able to recognize opioid overdose and reverse it by administering naloxone
  • Participants will become advocates for the people who suffer from this opioid addiction.
