Over the past year, Unions throughout the UK have been doing great work on the BME attainment gap and on broader issues of social mobility. Last year at the LSESU, we finally started to do research on the BME attainment gap, with special focus on the attainment gap for Black Home students, and on the issue of social mobility/class (terminology varies) in our institution. These are fundamentally important issues, affecting all universities across the UK, and we know many unions throughout the UK are undertaking ground breaking work in addressing and tackling these issues in our universities, and on pushing our universities to take action. These issues are obviously not siloed in individual institutions, and we believe it is important to share the work we’ve been doing with our peers, and discuss how to take it further to really push our universities into taking action.
We are inviting you to attend a one day event at LSE which will focus on how we as unions of Russell Group institutions can work together to share best practice and collaborate on these issues facing our institutions. We want to provide a forum for our unions to focus on these two big issues facing the sector, and our institutions in particular.
We are aware that some of you are doing some really good work on both of these things and they may not be getting the air time that they deserve in amongst all of the TEF/Fees issues. We’d ask therefore if you could all bring with you an example of the type of work that you are doing with either (or preferably both) of these subjects to discuss with others. The agenda for the day will look something like this:
Two parallel morning sessions where people bring forward their examples of work that they are doing on these subjects
Two parallel afternoon sessions with a presentation from someone not in the Russell Group talking about how they are tackling the problems
A final ‘round up’ in the afternoon where we plan if there is anything we can work on collaboratively
The event will take place on December the 9th 2016, from 10am until 6pm. We hope that you will be able to join us. The event will be free and we will provide refreshments, breakfast and a sandwich lunch. If you have any ideas for specific things you want to bring to the table or if you would like a timeslot to talk about something specific then please don’t hesitate to let us know.
