Educational Objectives. After attending this intermediate-level program in full, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe ways in which sexuality and gender have evolved along with modern technology and cultural/social changes.
  2. Describe strategies to distinguish healthy sexual and relationship diversity from symptoms of DSM disorders.
  3. Identify tools and strategies for helping clients and their families understand and integrate their own or their family members’ gender identity, sexual orientation and relationship preferences.
  4. Identify resources and educational materials to improve treatment of modern sexual dilemmas.

Description of Program: Sex, gender and relationships are evolving quickly alongside tech, social media, and “mainstream” culture shifts. With these changes, children and teens are disclosing new life and relationship problems that may be unfamiliar to even experienced clinicians. This presentation will discuss the terminology, ethical considerations, relationship structures and common issues presented in therapy by gender, sexual and relationship minorities as well as describe the resources and techniques available to the modern-day clinician. Guidance on assessment, intervention, and treatment planning will be given to help prevent over-pathologization of sexual/relationship behaviors that are new and often misunderstood. In addition, this presentation will assist participants in examining their own mono-normative worldviews and how that might impact their clinical practice.

Presenter: Kate Kincaid, LPC is a therapist, activist, and educator who has been interested in non-monogamy since she was a teenager. Her personal fascination with relationships and sexuality lead her to pursue a fulfilling career as a licensed professional counselor. Kate studied at the Kinsey Institute which is a renowned school for the study of sexuality. She owns a small private practice specializing in counseling gender and sexual minorities and people in alternative relationship models (non-monogamy/polyamory). Kate is passionate about providing ongoing trainings to help counselors improve their skills in working with sexual and gender minorities and to improve services for members of her beloved polya community. Her personal and professional beliefs are informed by feminism and social justice, seeing much of the dis-ease in our lives as rooted in a normal response to a broken system that is then pathologized and stigmatized.
