Presented by Licensed Professional Counselor Michelle Marzo!!

Attendees can expect to learn about the “bio-psycho-social” aspects of Substance Use Disorder (mild/moderate/severe).

Firstly, describe the pathophysiology of the addicted brain vs. non-addicted brain. This will include going over how the brain cells function and the role of neurotransmitters. Discuss other aspects of brain differences such as communication differences between the pre-frontal cortex and the limbic system that promote relapse. (craving) There will be a video short on craving which can lead to relapse. (Dr. Childress’s research). Discussion around lack of D2 receptors (Nora Volkow NIDA research).

Secondly, we will describe underlying mental health issues and unmet needs during human development that may lead to substance issues.

Lastly, we will describe the social aspect of addiction and show video short “Everything you think you know about Addiction is Wrong.”

We will end by describing what I encourage clients to do to attend to their issues dependent on where they are in their readiness to change.
