Description

"Addiction and OCD: Gaps and Overlaps in Treatment”

Lori Johnson, M.A., LPC, LAC

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is often undiagnosed and a highly misunderstood mental health disorder. We, even as professionals, often overlook the signs of OCD and treat the general anxiety versus true signs of OCD. In the addiction field, we have a dedication to helping clients with recovery. However, if we may miss the underlying OCD elements, we may jeopardize teen clients overall recovery.

The escape of drinking and drugging are a relief from the obsessive cycles of OCD a client experiences. Teen OCD within addiction may mask itself as generalized anxiety, depression, oppositional behaviors, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Lori Johnson will discuss what clinicians can do to help clients progress on their treatment plans and rule out other diagnosis and teen behavior presentation. Explore the benefits in using referrals for clinicians trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to support clients recovery journey.

Learning Objectives

1. The importance of simultaneous treatment for addiction and OCD.

2. Differentiate between anxiety thought rumination versus obsessive thoughts.

3. Learn other teen specific presentations and co-occuring maladaptive behaviors for teens.

4. Hear a Case Study on OCD and Addiction and treatment outcomes.

5. Identify gaps in treatment that jeopardize clients recovery with both OCD and addiction.

6. How to advocate for your clients recovery and work with appropriate providers to support your client relapse prevention plans.
