Participant qualifications

  • Yoga instructors-Completion of at least 200-hour Registered Yoga Alliance teacher training & Two more years of yoga instruction experience suggested
  • Neuro-rehabilitation professionals, such as physical and occupational therapists and nurses
  • Caregivers of people living with movement disorder conditions who have a fundamental knowledge of yoga and a regular practice.

Suggested preparation

  • MS Society on line class for fitness trainers

Training objectives:

  • Dr. James Voci, M.D., Neurologist and Chair of Yoga Moves MS will present about Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease,and a basic understanding of the nervous system and neuromuscular conditions in terms of types, symptoms and treatment options
  • Definition and guiding principles of adaptive yoga for students with MS and neuromuscular conditions
  • How to apply adaptive yoga techniques to symptoms of neuromuscular conditions, with emphasis on MS (such as fatigue, weakness, impaired balance, rigidity and spasms, pain, anxiety, incontinence, and cognitive impairment)
  • Overcome fear of teaching adaptive yoga to students with differing abilities
  • Essential components to an effective small group adaptive yoga classes
  • How to safely address and assist with transfers to and from a chair and yoga mat
  • How to apply mindfulness techniques to adaptive yoga curriculum, including how to cope with pain

Competency goals for an effective adaptive yoga instructor

  1. Attune to whole person, rather than student’s condition or disease
  2. Empower students to contribute to self-care for wellness and healing
  3. Embrace instructor or therapist role without trying to fix the student
  4. Demonstrate working knowledge of breath and foundational alignment principles and how to apply them to adaptive yoga
  5. Instruct students with a range abilities and challenges
  6. Respond to individual student and class needs safely, sensitively, and appropriately
  7. Provide assistance with adaptive yoga poses and alignment adjustments
  8. Think mindfully on the spot and in the present moment, while welcoming change in student and class needs

Practical experience

  • Creative, empowering and playful environment to explore adapting yoga poses
  • The ability to look through the lense of the adaptive yoga student
  • Increased confidence to teach adaptive yoga
  • Hands-on practice with peers (and adaptive yoga students)
  • Learnings from experienced instructors

Friday, March 16: 5pm to 9pm

Saturday, March 17: 8am to 6pm

Sunday March 18: 8am to 2pm
