Pediatric Rehabilitation & Wellness is excited to offer this weekly 45 minute program which is designed to introduce differently abled children to the sports of tumbling and rhythmic gymnastics through developing beginning tumbling skills and an introduction to rhythmic gymnastics. Sessions are 6 weeks with the opportunity to enroll in multiple sessions to continue to advance skills and enjoy this healthy and fun sport. Class size is limited and the child's caregiver/volunteer participates as needed to ensure participant success and individual attention.
There will be no class 11.25.16 due to Thanksgiving.
About the instructor: Dr. Abdelghani has more than 10 years of experience coaching rhythmic gymnastics and is a certified rhythmic gymnastics judge. She has helped many gymnasts compete and win medals at state, regional and national competitions.After completing her residency and relocating to the Savannah area, she is excited to promote a healthy and fun environment for the sport which has been her passion since she started competing at age 6.
What is rhythmic gymnastics?
According to the Olympic committee, "Rhythmic gymnastics evolved from a host of related disciplines. It incorporates elements from classical ballet, such as pliés and arabesques, as well as the German system of emphasising apparatus work for muscle development and the Swedish method of using free exercise to develop rhythm."
Participants combine elements of ballet, gymnastics, and apparatus use including ribbons, hoops, balls, clubs, and ropes.
Rhythmic gymnastics has been part of the Olympic games since the first modern games in 1896.
How might rhythmic gymnastics help my child?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:
Sports participation enhances the psychological well- being of children with disabilities through the provision of opportunities to form friendships, express creativity, develop a self-identity, and foster meaning and purpose in life. Special Olympics participants show heightened self-esteem, perceived physical competence, and peer acceptance when compared with nonparticipants. Parents of Special Olympians reported that their child’s participation promoted social adjustment, life satisfaction, family support, and community involvement. Such events provide a much-needed venue for informal peer support and sharing of experiences among families of children with disabilities. Mildly strenuous exercise has been shown to reduce stereotypic movements, maladaptive behaviors, and fatigue in children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Last, participation in regular physical activity can foster independence, coping abilities, competitiveness, and teamwork among children with disabilities.

A 2009 study demonstrated that rhythmic gymnastics was helpful to increase moving balance in people with disabilities.
Who can participate?
This class is designed for boys and girls ages 3-5 with differing abilities who want to have fun, make new friends, and learn the basics of tumbling and experience and introduction to rhythmic gymnastics in a fun and supportive environment. Caregivers/volunteers are required to participate in adaptive classes.
What does my child need to wear?
Close fitting comfortable clothing such as a t-shirt or tank top and leggings or a leotard if desired.
Do I need to provide specialty equipment?
No, all equipment/apparatuses are provided by the instructor.
