Did you know that approximately half of all adults with Down syndrome will develop Alzheimer’s disease in later life? Some adults with Down syndrome show symptoms by their early 30’s. In the general population, Alzheimer’s disease strikes 1 in 10 adults. During this two-hour training, you will learn what you can do early in life to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and steps you can take now to help doctors properly diagnose an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). You will learn how Alzheimer’s presents differently in individuals with IDD and possible causes of reversible dementia. Last, you will learn to successfully communicate with individuals at each stage of the disease process and be given tools for creating a “dementia friendly” environment.

Free childcare, accommodation and interpretation services are available to families who pre-register with one week’s notice.
