Our Speakers:

Dr. Eric Westman is a practicing clinician, a #1 New York Times best-selling author, and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in his field. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University Health System and the Director of the Duke Lifestyle Medical Clinic. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and has a Master’s Degree in clinical research, with over 90 peer-reviewed publications to his name. Dr. Westman has dedicated his life to helping patients with various medical conditions such as Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, Obesity, Hypertension, and many others through diet and lifestyle choices.

Dr. Jay Wortman has worked in family medicine, public health, medical administration, and research. He has held senior management positions in Health Canada in Ottawa and Vancouver. For the past 15 years, he has worked with low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet in both the research and practice settings. For many years, his work was focused in First Nations and Inuit communities. One of his studies trialed a low carb traditional diet in a First Nations community and was the subject of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary film, “My Big Fat Diet”. Dr. Wortman is a frequent presenter on the benefits of a low carbohydrate high fat diet at scientific meetings and continuing medical education events. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Atkins Nutritionals Inc. Dr. Wortman currently practices in West Vancouver where he uses a low carb high-fat diet for the treatment of metabolic and inflammatory conditions.

Dr. Barbra Allen Bradshaw is an Anatomical Pathologist, currently working in Abbotsford, BC. She became interested in nutrition and food as medicine six years ago when diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Through personal re-education, she has discovered that the current dietary guidelines were not based on evidence, and have contributed to our epidemics of diabetes and obesity. Since her pregnancy, she has continued eating a whole food, lower carbohydrate diet, resulting in weight loss without hunger. She has seen dramatic improvements in the metabolic health of many of her family and friends using a whole food approach.

Dr. Allen Bradshaw has become involved in nutritional advocacy, and has been collaborating with other physicians and health professionals with an aim to improve the health of Canadians; she has a particular focus on reducing sugar and refined carbohydrates in children’s schools, as well as the development of improved, evidence-based dietary guidelines for Canadians. She also is the co-founder of a large group of Canadian physicians and health professionals using whole food, therapeutic nutrition to reverse disease, called the Canadian Clinicians for Therapeutic Nutrition.

Our Guest Speaker:

"Four years after the birth of her second child, Dr. Carol Loffellman was attempting to lose her stubborn “baby weight” and despite her diligent adherence to a low fat diet and extensive exercise regime, was struggling. She was introduced to a paleo way of eating by an anesthesiology colleague and began noticing improvements in her weight and her health almost immediately. It's been almost 7 years that she has changed the way she and her family eats.

Dr. Loffelmann works as an anesthesiologist. She recognized that the medical education she received in nutrition was not adequate to manage her own metabolic needs. In the seven years since embarking on a low carbohydrate, whole food dietary approach, Dr. Loffelmann has extensively reviewed the scientific literature surrounding dietary research. She has immersed herself in the basic biochemistry behind human metabolism and nutrient breakdown, the evolution of mitochondria, the history of the microbiome, the dopamine reward system, and the science of epidemiology (among other topics) to ensure that she has a well informed understanding of the biological principles and plausibility of this dietary approach as it applies to modern human health. She endeavors to promote collaboration among Canadian health professionals in the treatment and prevention of our modern day health epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease through therapeutic nutrition."
