Our Speakers:

Dr. Eric Westman is a practicing clinician, a #1 New York Times best-selling author, and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in his field. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University Health System and the Director of the Duke Lifestyle Medical Clinic. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and has a Master’s Degree in clinical research, with over 90 peer-reviewed publications to his name. Dr. Westman has dedicated his life to helping patients with various medical conditions such as Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, Obesity, Hypertension, and many others through diet and lifestyle choices.

Dr. Eric Thorn is a non-invasive cardiologist and obesity medicine specialist. He graduated from medical school from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2001. He trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2001 - 2004. He then returned to the University of Maryland for his cardiology training. He is board certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear cardiology, and obesity medicine. In 2012, he founded the Center for Cardio-metabolic Health and Weight Loss, an intensive, medically supervised program of nutritional rehabilitation. Since 2015, he has been at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. Working hand in hand with his nurse, Marlou Hopkins, RN. He has helped thousands of patients make positive changes through lifestyle intervention. Dr. Thorn believes that the implementation of an individualized, real food based, low carbohydrate lifestyle is the cornerstone of cardiovascular prevention. Through healthy living combined with a strategic and appropriate use of diagnostic technology and medications, he helps his patients achieve optimal cardiovascular health.

Marylou Hopkins is a Registered Nurse at Virginia Hospital Center with the physician group in the Cardiology department. She became a registered nurse in 2009 after being a stay at home mom for twelve years. She spent four years as a bariatric surgical nurse providing one-on-one coaching to patients preparing to have surgery as well as helping them throughout their journey. In 2012, after studying under Dr. Eric Westman at the Duke Lifestyle Clinic in Durham, she was given the opportunity to join a Cardiology practice with Dr. Eric Thorn.

Together, the team created a nutritional program designed to give patients medical supervision while educating them on how to eliminate sugar and unhealthy processed high carb foods from their diet. Their unique personable approach starts with being a careful listener. They make a point to consider their patient's entire health and life circumstances, since cardiovascular disease and risk for cardiovascular disease do not occur in isolation. This is the key to their program's success.
