Event description

Description

This workshop will teach you how to facilitate some of our favorite and most effective activities to move participants in their understanding of racism, the impact of stereotypes, and awareness of institutional privilege. Activities you'll learn to guide include simulations, small and large group discussions, use of images, stories, slides, and other participatory exercises. While you engage in hands-on exercises, we’ll model and walk you through strategies we’ve used to help deepen the conversation and allow participants to construct new knowledge.

Both experienced and novice trainers will learn new activities and skills. However, participants in this workshop should have awareness of your own biases, privileges and internalized oppression, as well as some knowledge of institutional racism and white privilege in the United States. The more personal work you have done to understand these issues, the more you will get out of this workshop as a facilitator.

All participants will receive a set of Norm Cards and a free copy of our Activities flash drive, complete with step-by-step lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, articles, poems, handouts, evaluation forms & more!

Participants will...

  • Learn to facilitate activities that invite people into new understandings of racism, privilege & power.
  • Further develop strategies to address discomfort and tension in workshops.
  • Leave with lesson plans for activities ranging from basic facilitation skills to advanced strategies.

How is this different from our Train the Trainer workshop?

Although the "Train the Trainer" workshop is not a prerequisite to attend our "Activities" workshop, it is a great follow-up if you've already attended "Train the Trainer" in the past. This workshop walks you through the instructions for simulations, prompts, games & other activities--all of which are on the flash drive you'll receive complimentary for attending the workshop. In contrast, the focus of our "Train the Trainer" workshop is on facilitating strategies that can be used in any group conversation, regardless of the activity.
