Event description

Description

Background and Overview:

The reality is young people’s voices, lived experiences, and agency to activate their leadership potential is inherently already there. As adult allies, engaging young people in various youth development spaces can be challenging without a toolkit to facilitate and create braver spaces to ignite youth. This interactive workshop, offered by the Perrin Family Foundation, builds on youth development principles by introducing youth workers to the framework of critical consciousness. Critical consciousness is the ability to recognize and analyze systems of inequality and develop a critical lens to navigate and challenge these systems.

Through hands-on activities, this training will provide youth workers with tools, tips, and strategies to transform traditional youth development icebreakers, games and activities into approaches that incorporate a critical consciousness lens. Training participants will walk away with concrete tools and activities that can be replicated in their programs and organizations in order to better engage and support youth in community learning, identity exploration, and utilizing their lived experiences to activate their leadership potential.

Presenters: Morgan Little, LMSW and Anson Dean, MPS (bios here).

Who should attend this training?

This training is for adults allies, mentors and staff supporting young people in youth leadership, organizing, and development programs, community spaces, and schools across Connecticut. The strategies offered in the training will work best for those working with young people between 13-24 years old who are most directly impacted by systems of oppression (youth of color, LGBTQ youth, homeless/transient youth, previously incarcerated youth, disabled youth).

As part of PFF's commitment to supporting the broader youth social change field, this training is provided free of charge to youth workers across the state of Connecticut. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Workshop participants will discuss and analyze the concept of critical consciousness and critically unpack the advantages of adapting this lens to youth development practices.

  2. Workshop participants will explore the youth engagement continuum and identify the ways in which programs at all points on the continuum can engage in critical conscious youth development.

  3. Workshop participants will learn to operationalize concepts with hands-on tools, techniques, and activities.

  4. Workshop participants will experience and learn activities and games to implement into their youth work.
