Learners with autism often have difficulty acquiring and using language and, as a result, professionals and parents have difficulty understanding their basic wants and needs. This is complicated by that fact that many learners with autism use problem behavior to communicate. Consequently, problem behavior often escalates over time, making it more difficult to teach the person various communication and other skills. This session will overview a method called functional communication training. This evidence-based practice helps professionals better understand the communicative nature of problem behavior and allows them to intervene in ways that improve communication skills while simultaneously reducing problem behavior. This session will overview principles of behavior necessary for deciphering the messages sent via problem behavior as well as specific steps necessary to effectively implement this intervention.
