Event description
Young Voices for the Planet welcomes educators of all backgrounds to learn how to empower the next generation of environmental stewards.

About this Event

Young Voices for the Planet (YVFP) is offering a series of Civic Engagement and Democracy Educator Workshops throughout greater Pittsburgh and Western PA. Thanks to generous funding from The Heinz Endowments, these day-long professional development courses welcome formal and informal educators of all grade levels and subjects areas to explore ways to empower and inspire their students in the face of climate change and other environmental concerns. Each workshop is led by a professional facilitator who will guide teachers in discussions and break-out sessions, as well as a formal presentation from YVFP founder, children’s book author/illustrator Lynne Cherry.

La Roche College is pleased to partner with YVFP to host the January 27, 2019 workshop.

Workshop Goals Include:

•Young Voices for the Planet’s theory of change and approach to youth empowerment.

•Considering psychology and social science when teaching troubling environmental issues.

•How to overcome students’ “motivated avoidance” when learning about troubling issues.

•Helping students overcome doom and gloom and be energized by hope for the future.

•Guiding students in creating their ACTION PLAN to address an issue of their choosing in their community in western Pennsylvania.

Registration Includes:

*ACT 48 credits upon workshop completion

*Continental breakfast and lunch

* Free on-site parking
