Take your asana to new heights...literally! The AcroYoga practice combines the grace of yoga with the excitement of acrobatics and the joy of working in community. We will employ safe, simple steps to approach dynamic postures that may otherwise seem impossible. We will learn proper physical techniques and tools to fly and give flight to others! In the process, we will cultivate trust, strength, empowerment and playfulness. By embodying the roles of base, flyer, and spotter, we will develop communication and trust, along with deepening our physical yoga practice.
AcroYoga frees us from the barriers we assume on ourselves and our bodies by challenging the fundamental concept that our feet need to be on the ground (or mat!). We will defy gravity as we find stability, flexibility, and freedom in flying poses that may seem challenging in our normal yoga practice, such as boat, plank, chair, crow, and even handstand. These poses can feel easy, safe, and fun with the support of a base and the security of a spotter. Expect to laugh, meet new people and surprise yourself with what you can do! This workshop is for all levels of experience, whether you've never tried AcroYoga before or you are a seasoned practitioner. Come alone or bring all your friends!
Elise Foster, inspired by her yoga teaching grandmother Liselotte ("Lilo") Foster, began practicing yoga at a young age. In 2011, Elise "flew" for the first time at Meridian Hill Park and immediately fell in love with AcroYoga and it's lineage of 3 different elements - yoga, acrobatics, and the healing arts. She is a certified AcroYoga International teacher, Tantra Hatha Vinyasa yoga teacher, and Thai masseuse. Elise aims to bring to others the joy, power and healing energy that yoga and AcroYoga brought into her life. Like nothing else she has experienced, AcroYoga has the ability to transform lives - it can free one's playful spirit, create community, and cultivate trust and communication. Outside of teaching, you can catch Elise performing around DC or nationally with Acrolesque.
Dean Hively is a certified AcroYoga International teacher and has studied it for five years. Dean has a laid back and positive approach to life and teaching. His teaching emphasizes safety, form, and the energetics of partnership. His goal is to promote joy, amazement, and comfort in community. Before coming to yoga he had a long history of training in kung fu, including buddah palm, animal styles, chi gung, and lion dancing. The kung fu taught him a profound respect for the human form and its relation to the universe through connection with energy and body mechanics. By day he is an environmental research scientist, and he moonlights as a performer in Acrolesque with Elise.
