Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Update (Renewal) Course
Special Note: As of March 1, 2008 if your ACLS card is expired, you may attend an update (renewal) course, but you may not remediate. You must pass all testing stations on your first attempt. If you do not pass all testing stations on your first attempt, you will need to complete the ACLS Provider Course (2 Day). BRING YOUR ACLS CARD AND YOUR CURRENT BLS CARD WITH YOU. You will be asked to present both during registration.
Description and Target Audience: This American Heart Association (AHA) workshop is designed for RNs, LPNs, physicians, RTs, EMS, and other healthcare providers who either direct or participate in resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of the hospital. The AHA has developed this ACLS course for currently active healthcare providers (eg, medical, nursing, emergency medical, or allied health personnel) whose daily occupation or volunteer activities demand proficiency in the knowledge and skills of ACLS. This course is for current ACLS providers wishing to renew their status.
ACLS is designed to cover these concepts:
- Identification and treatment of medical conditions that place the patient at risk for cardiac arrest.
- BLS primary survey.
- ACLS secondary survey.
- ACLS algorithms.
- Effective resuscitation team dynamics.
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
- Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.
- Demonstrate management of cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation, termination or resuscitation or transfer of care.
- Identify other life threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and providing effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.
- Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
- Demonstrate the team leader role in a megacode according to the skills testing checklist.
