State of Employment and Labor Law, Sponsored by Jackson Lewis, P.C.


During this program, seasoned and knowledgeable speakers senior equity shareholders in Jackson Lewis P.C. Lynn Outwater and Douglas Smith will cover hot and emerging topics in labor and employment law. Attendees will learn everything they need to know to ensure compliance in the ever evolving employment law landscape.

Lynn C. Outwater is a Principal in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. She was also a founding partner of the firm's Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati offices.

Ms. Outwater served on the national SHRM HR Certification Institute Board of Directors and the national SHRM Foundation Board of Directors as Treasurer and was a member of the Executive Committee. She is a member of the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association Advisory Board. She is also the past chair of the national Employee and Labor Relations Committee of the Society for Human Resource Management (“SHRM”). Ms. Outwater was elected and served on the 2005 and 2006 Membership Advisory Council (MAC) to the SHRM Board representing the Northeast Region which includes Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. For over a decade, she served as a faculty member for SHRM’s HR Generalist and Advanced Generalist Certificate Programs. Ms. Outwater served on the National Board of the SHRM Consultant’s Forum (2002-2003). She was the elected Director for SHRM’s Pennsylvania State Council for 2004 and 2005. Ms. Outwater has received professional accreditation in the human resources field by achieving the SPHR designation.

Ms. Outwater frequently lectures on labor and employment law topics before Jackson Lewis clients and national and regional employer associations. Ms. Outwater is a nationally sought after workplace law substantive expert as evidenced by her appearance on the PBS television program, “On the Issues,” a series that explored issues confronting American business today. Ms. Outwater has testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce representing both the Society for Human Resource Management and the FMLA Technical Corrections Coalition, a 160-member American business coalition.

Douglas G. Smith is the Office Managing Principal of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. He is also the national Pro Bono Coordinator and, for the last two years, has served as national chair of the firm’s Partnership Admission Committee.

In addition to counseling employers in matters such as union organizational campaigns, Mr. Smith focuses his practice in the area of employment law litigation before agencies and courts on the state and federal level. Mr. Smith has successfully litigated matters in state and federal court under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and various state tort theories. He has additionally successfully handled and tried matters before FINRA and AAA. Mr. Smith also regularly represents employers in collective bargaining in all industries with an emphasis assisting acute care and long term health care employers.

Prior to commencing the practice of law, Mr. Smith was employed in a management human resources position for a major Pittsburgh health system where he was responsible for handling discrimination charges, unemployment compensation matters, day-to-day administration of personnel policies and grievance processing. Prior to that, Mr. Smith was employed as a labor organizer for a state-wide healthcare union.

Mr. Smith is a sought after speaker on a wide variety of employment related topics and has been an adjunct faculty member in the industrial relations masters degree program of a Pittsburgh college.
