Event description

Description

This free half-day event caters to social service professionals and advocates; and will act as a forum to educate and share information regarding best practices in navigating housing issues that arise with our most vulnerable populations in Delaware County. The PA Link to Aging and Disability Resource Center Delaware County is pleased to sponsor this event. Presentation topics include:

Exploring the Intersection of Mental Health and Housing

Untreated mental health conditions can lead to circumstances that cause a housing crisis or homelessness; and mental health issues can be brought on as a consequence to homelessness. Experts in the mental health and housing fields will discuss: how mental health conditions (including hoarding) can put someone at risk for homelessness; fair housing protections for people with a mental health diagnoses; and resources available to individuals who have a mental health condition.

Motivational Interviewing in Housing-Focused Services

Motivational Interviewing is an effective approach social service professionals and advocates can use to help clients “buy-in” to making necessary changes in order to reach their goals. This motivational interviewing primer will introduce how to use this empowering approach to help individuals and families identify and achieve their goals related to accessing and maintaining permanent housing.

Delaware County Coordinated Entry: ‘Opening Doors to Stable Housing and Self-Sufficiency’

Experiencing a housing crisis is stressful and may cause many problems in other areas of life. This presentation will explain how the coordinated entry process helps individuals who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness easily access housing assistance and homeless prevention resources. Stories of individuals or families that have successfully navigated the coordinated entry process will be highlighted.

Understanding Reverse Mortgages

The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), also known as a ‘reverse mortgage’ is a FHA insured loan that allows older homeowners to access equity in their homes to supplement their monthly income. As with anything, there are pros and cons to reverse mortgages. This presentation will cover how reverse mortgages work, how long HECM money lasts, who are reverse mortgages right for, and what can go wrong when a homeowner defaults.

Free informational resources will be available for attendees and speakers will include representatives from NHS Human Services of Delaware County, Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania, The Reinvestment Fund, Crozer-Keystone Health System, and Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health.
