'Accessibility in Practice - Lessons for the European Accessibility Act'

28 February 2017, 13:30 – 16:30, Brussels

In the EU, there are around 30 million visually-impaired people of all ages, of whom 1.6 million are completely blind. Similarly, there are over 70 million people with moderate-to-severe hearing loss, and an estimated 25-35 million people with physical disabilities of all forms. Hearing a movie soundtrack, reading an on-screen menu, dialing a phone number or just changing TV channels can be a real challenge for many.

The digital industry has been early in discovering the enormous potential and opportunities that accessible design can bring to businesses and consumers. The last decades have generated a wealth of experience to draw on and guide European accessibility legislation from various sources: the passionate engineers and developers in our member companies, a user community whose feedback and input to design processes drives innovation, as well as initiatives by governments both outside and within EU member states to promote accessibility.

While the legislative process is in full swing, DIGITALEUROPE would like to take this opportunity to have a hands-on discussion of the European Accessibility Act. The aim is a constructive debate involving various stakeholders to address different legislative and implementation aspects of the proposed legislation building on the lessons learned in the past.
