Presentation
Accessibility in Action - a live coding adventure! by Jason Webb
Grab a snack, fire up CodePen, and follow along as we pick apart and fix some broken pages! In this session we'll focus on actually writing some code together and learning how to experience the web the way people with disabilities do. No slides, just code (and hopefully pet cameos)!
By the end of the night you'll know:
- Why accessibility is a hot skill in 2020.
- How to get any page most of the way there using good HTML and easy tests.
- The basics of using a screen reader to "listen" to a page (its fun, I promise!).
- What a "bad" page looks / feels / sounds / smells like for someone with a disability.
- Where to go to learn more, the fun way - rockstars, websites, courses, and more.
Introductions
Introductions will be done in a small group, breakout room format. Each person will be asked to briefly introduce themselves and share an experience with something that's currently challenging them.
After 10 minutes, we'll break from our groups and move on to presentations.
Getting there
We will be sending out a link to join us on Zoom ahead of the event. If you are not using Zoom for professional or personal connections, please download it in advance of our event.
FAQ
I'm an experienced developer. Can I be a mentor?
Absolutely! Our members would love your mentorship, but space at our events is limited. If you're interested in mentoring or advising the folks in our community, please email us so we can coordinate the best way to facilitate that.
Where can I get more information?
Lots of ways! We've got a website, a Slack group, and will be sending out emails to announce future events. But for now, just email us and we'll point you in the right direction.
