WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

We welcome all people of all abilities! We also welcome all job descriptions, whether you’re a designer, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, project manager, or therapist, or even looking for cool projects while between jobs. Diverse groups often work incredibly well together to produce the best results. In particular, we are focused on making space for people with disabilities and elevating their voices and perspectives for this event.

WHAT IS AN ACCESS + ABILITY BUILD-A-THON?

Most simply, accessibility tech is any technology or tool designed with the intention of enhancing the human experience for people with visible and invisible disabilities. Solutions may cover any of the areas associated with health and well-being, safety, entertainment, or dating experiences.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Innovations in for diversity and inclusion for people with disabilities will allow us to experience, express, and understand how we can make a better and more equitable world in ways we never thought possible. The key value of accessible products and services is that they are designed around the most basic themes of diversity: access. While there is plenty of potential in this space, it is largely untapped.

We believe that self-identifying people with disabilities and their allies can influence the direction of this market, while also changing the cultural conversation and attitudes toward inclusion and as such move for the destigmatization of being a person with a disability. This event is designed to be open to all, but our ambition is for the voices of people with disabilities to be a contributing elements to all projects arising from our event.

Pre-Hackathon Workshops

Over the course of September we will have a series of pre- Build-a-Thon workshops where attendees can come together and learn from each other in lecture style and interactive workshops. More information on this in the coming weeks!

Idea Marketplace

We are in the process of developing an Idea Marketplace for event attendees to pitch their ideas prior to the event and forming teams before the actual event date to maximize the time spent creatively solving problems. Most of the day on Saturday will be spent building prototypes and tools, and at the end of the day participants will have the opportunity to pitch to a disability leaders and advocates (and maybe even investors!).

ABOUT THE EVENT:

People with disabilities have long been integral to design processes, though frequently viewed as “inspiration” rather than active participants. The purpose of the Disability Build-a-Thon is to create a space where individuals with disabilities are given the tools and resources to become active contributors to the solutions and tools that will improve their own lives, and potentially, the lives of others.

The theme of the event is simple, "Your Disability. Your Solution." Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time, we are the problem solvers we have been waiting for and we must work to solve our own problems. The event will center on individuals with disabilities in collaboration with allies to foster innovation, disruption, and user-centered design that will make our world more accessible. The general theme will be building with not for people with disabilities and we look forward to working with engineers, designers, and problem solvers across the board. Want to see the full proposal?
