Event description

Description

Event Description:

This is the California Acceleration Project's third annual statewide conference showcasing how community colleges are responding to the requirements of AB 705 and fostering the success of all students.

This conference is intended for people working with the California community college system, including faculty, administrators, researchers, system leaders, policymakers and advocates, as well as faculty and administrators from CSU and UC. We regret that we do not have the capacity to include attendees from outside of California.

Keynote Speakers:

Zaretta Hammond, national education consultant and author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students, will give a speech titled "The Essentials of Instructional Equity: Supporting Students to be the Leaders of Their Own Learning," focusing on the opportunities and challenges of helping dependent learners build their ability to process new content more effectively.

Carrie Marks is a Professor of English at Sacramento City College who piloted one of the first corequisite courses in the state with a cohort of students in the Umoja learning community and leads acceleration-focused professional development within her department and district. Her speech, titled "Maximum Capacity: Increasing Ours to Recognize Theirs," will focus on building a capacity mindset in faculty to support students in the post-AB 705 classroom.
