The Academy of Tease is excited to present a one day intensive of the Delsarte System led by the world’s leading instructor, Willy Barrett (Joe Williams). Willy Barrett has been called the high priest of dance . He is considered the world's foremost expert on the Delsarte technique, which he uses to teach performing artists. A teacher of dance, voice and yoga, Joe has a BA in organizational and interpersonal communications, and a minor in theater from Wright State University, where he was the artistic director for the "Rolling Stock" theater group, helping to write and produce touring shows that presented the talents of differently-abled students. He was a scholarship student in ballet at the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance schools (becoming assistant business manager of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for one year), and taught communication workshops for the Wright State School of Medicine for 6 years. He also studied classical voice, which led him to New York to study with Jon Frederic West of the Metropolitan Opera. During that stay in New York, he began studying Middle Eastern dance with Morrocco and the Casbah Dance Experience.
Willy Barrett has taught at such notable locations as The Juilliard School, the Cincinnati Conservatory, the National Center of Dance in Paris, the Stuttgart Conservatory and many others. He was also for many years a permanent guest faculty member for Morocco and the Casbah Dance, and is well known in the Middle Eastern Dance community for his Delsarte workshops for ethnic and tribal dancers. The Delsarte technique itself, was the method used by Ned Wayburn to choreograph the Ziegfeld Follies, and train vaudeville dancers, notably Fred and Adele Astaire. It was the technique used by Isadora Duncan, and by which Broadway choreography legend Jack Cole was trained.
Seducing with Props. 11:30-1PM
This class will look at the character choices made available by a prop, and how the ways in which you hold and move a prop are filled with exciting dramatic content. You will leave the class with ideas of how to draw the most effect possible from every prop you use, and how to calmly and mercilessly seduce your audience with them. This knowledge becomes a skill that you can use to maximize the power of your performance.
The Mystery of Power, Stage Presence and Beauty in Gesture. 1:15-2:45PM
This class will show you how to effortlessly manifest Beauty, Power, and Presence in some of the most basic movements of dance. We will work on a few simple exercises that we can do to reduce tensions that inhibit our power, and will train our bodies to express our own personal power and natural grace without affectation. These three skills belong to everyone, and we will unlock them together.
Arms & Hands. 3-4:30PM
In this class we will study the body language of arms and hands, including how that language can inspire work with gloves. We will look at the emotional content and symbolism of every single part of the arms and hands, and how you can use that knowledge to enrich both your dancing and your tease.
Workshops are $30 each, $80 for the bundle of three if registered by April 15th.
