About this Event

Join us on Tuesday, September 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Great Lakes Central Room (4th Floor) of Palmer Commons our first AIM Spotlight as we welcome in Simon Nelson, FutureLearn CEO, and Matt Walton, FutureLearn Chief Product Officer, who will share insights into how the design of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform impacts the learning experience. Lunch is provided.

Description – The international education sector is currently going through significant change. Student attitudes and expectations are changing as digital technology advances and the world of higher education commercializes. The workforce of today is also very different to that of just a generation ago and the workforce of tomorrow will be different again. Gone are the jobs for life, replaced by things like the gig economy, a focus on digital skills, and the threat of automation resulting in businesses, governments and individuals seeking ways to reskill and upskill.

In this context, universities, learners and employers need to get ready for the workplace of tomorrow. Universities need to modernize in order to attract global students, deliver value for money, remain internationally relevant, and engage with employers to produce students who are ready for the workplace.

In this session, UK-based online social learning platform, FutureLearn, looks at how these challenges can be overcome. Simon Nelson, Chief Executive and Matt Walton, Chief Product Officer will be discussing the trends impacting universities today, asking what this means for the higher education sector and focusing on the role that technology can, and should, play in this new world.

  • Simon Nelson is Chief Executive of FutureLearn, the leading social learning platform and first UK-based provider of massive open online courses (MOOCs), which has now evolved to offer fully online degrees. Simon Nelson has a background in digital disruption as a pioneer in taking media brands and content online. He spent 14 years at the BBC, where he was instrumental in putting radio online, before moving to head up all digital content activities for its television divisions where he led the development of the BBC iPlayer and other groundbreaking online products and services. He joined FutureLearn at its inception and within six years, has led the team to secure investment valuing the business at £100 million.
  • Matt Walton is a digital product leader who likes to inspire people with different skills to work together to make the world a better place using technology. Matt is passionate about lean and agile product development. In the past, he’s led the development of innovative websites, apps and digital products for the likes of the BBC, Harper Collins and BSkyB. He is also an active member of London’s growing product management community, and a regular speaker at events. He’s one of the founding team at FutureLearn and as Chief Product Officer, Matt is responsible for the overall vision and direction for the FutureLearn platform.
