Title: Academic Advising: The Core of Student Success: Part III

Presenters: Caroline Cope-Myers, Jenifer Jones, Tania Overton

Abstract: To effectively support student growth, development and educational achievement, academic advisors should develop a set of professional skills, knowledge and behaviors.Success Navigators will present a series of advisor training workshops to ensure that advisors have the information and support they need to effectively meet the needs of PCC’s diverse student population. The workshops have been developed to expand core knowledge and skills, introduce new methods and tools, stimulate new thinking, and help advisors refine their advising values and philosophy. These sessions are designed to be participatory and collaborative, with opportunities for small-group and case study discussions. By participating in the training, advisors will be able to:

  • Implement strategies for establishing and maintaining the advisor-student relationship.

  • Engage and motivate students for academic success through a growth mindset.

  • Identify and demonstrate strategies for structuring advising sessions.

  • Discuss advising models and best practices.

  • Maximize use of available resources.

Workshop completion certificates will be awarded when participants complete the three part advising series. Participants receive a certificate based upon attendance and participation at all three sessions.

*Teaching and Learning sanctioned event. Attendance is worth 10 points.
