A YEARLY TRADITION FOR THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION:
AC Wedding of the Sea!
On August 15, 2017, the yearly tradition at the beach of the Wedding of the Sea will take place in Atlantic City at noon at Boardwalk Hall.
The main event begins at Boardwalk Hall with a mass to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, followed by a procession to water's edge at the beach. There, Camden Diocese Bishop Dennis Sullivan will have lifeguards take him into the ocean by lifeboat where he will toss the traditional wreath into the water.
Symbolic of the Wedding of the Sea tradition that began in Venice Italy where the town would celebrate its marriage to the waters. Italian immigrants here, from St. Michael's brought this tradition to Atlantic City many years ago, where it came to be part of the Catholic observance of the Feast of the Assumption. The feast day honors the belief that the Virgin Mary was assumed to heaven body and soul.
After the mass and the procession, everyone is then invited to return to St. Michael's Church / Parking lot from 1-6pm to enjoy the re-establishment of the traditional carnival, aka 'Festival' that had been a part of the festivities for so many years. It will be the ‘traditional’ carnival with exciting new twists - hence the new name of Festival. One element from the original carnival will remain the same, sausage subs with gravy, meatball subs, sausage pepper and onion subs. Come join in the fun!
Our hope is that you will join us as we celebrate:
- the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
- the revival and expansion of the traditional carnival,
- and our new citywide Parish of St Monica.
