Description
The sand dunes of the entire Sunset District were covered by buildings during one of San Francisco’s biggest building booms. Join local historian, author and tour guide Lorri Ungaretti to discover how this charming neighborhood emerged from windswept dunes originally deemed uninhabitable. Explore the area, see the bustling local color and hear fascinating history (and an occasional bit of lore).
Tour highlights include a history, with photos, of the transformation from dunes to neighborhood and examples of a style of common apartment built in the 1920s; a look at where Henry Doelger, builder of the greatest number of Sunset homes, grew up; and a visit to Doelger’s company headquarters (nominated for city landmark status).
All participants are strongly encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.
