Event description

Description

On this nighttime exploratory journey, participants are engaged to create a vision of future San Francisco, using light as a medium. A small group will explore areas within the former water line of the city, with Market Street as the central locus. At three open spaces along the route, the group will perform a thought experiment on what it means to be a human being in the city of the future using physical objects and light, as well as through experimental visual communications via Virtual Reality headsets that will aid in connecting the sites past, present, and future. These scenarios are shaped by the driving forces of change in the city: the water line, the evolution of commerce and industry around technological advancement, and demographic shifts. Each thought experiment is visualized with light tools, consisting of ubiquitous light objects. Portable LED lights, combined with multicolored balloons, theatrical lighting tools, and filters will be used to create customizable objects that give the participants creative agency to conceptualize the streetscape of the future. Materials will be provided. Tour will be lead by Susheela Sankaram, Senior Lighting Designer, Arup San Francisco / Amsterdam
