ABY VULLIAMY

Aby Vulliamy is a multi-instrumentalist (she sings and plays viola, piano, accordion, musical saw, flute, recorder etc) whose first serious forays into recording and performing in 2005/6 were with Scatter (Alex Neilson of Trembling Bells and Chris Hladowski of The Family Elan), The One Ensemble (Daniel Padden) and Nalle (Hanna Tuulikki). Since then Aby has shared the stage and/or studio with a brilliant array of musicians from a wide range of genres (including Maggie Nichols and Karen Mantler from the jazz/improvisation world, Krautrocker Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust, indie-rockers Yo La Tengo, folk musicians such as Alasdair Roberts, Bridget St John and Mike Heron from the Incredible String Band, pop stars such as Stevie Jackson (Belle and Sebastian) and Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and with a range of ensembles including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Aby’s ongoing long-term collaborations include with Stevie Jones (Sound of Yell, since 2012) with Bill Wells (The National Jazz Trio of Scotland, since 2007 with releases on Karaoke Kalk since 2012), with the 14-piece Swiss band Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp (since 2016) with Seth Bennett (En Bas, since 2014) and with Matt Bourne (Isotach, since 2017). Aby regularly runs improvisation workshops for Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and has made many appearances at festivals such as Counterflows, Celtic Connections and Tectonics in Glasgow, Women Make Music in Newcastle, and tours frequently in the UK and across mainland Europe.

Aby Vulliamy's main instruments are viola, piano and voice. Her debut album Spin Cycle is out on Karaoke Kalk in October 2018. The launch tour will feature George Murray on trombone and Stevie Jones on double bass.

SOUND OF YELL

Sound of Yell are a Glasgow based collective led by Stevie Jones, releasing records on Chemical Underground and most recently, Light The Currents on Berlin based 10” singles club, Infinite Greyscale. Jones is a prolific collaborator, having worked in the last year with Ela Orleans, Sue Tompkins, Aby Vulliamy, Ashley Paul, Bill Wells and The One Ensemble and playing as a member of the Alasdair Roberts Trio and Arab Strap. He’s recently written film music for Anne Marie Copestake’s A Blemished Code and Paul Fegan’s Where You’re Meant To Be and theatre scores for Arctic Oil (Traverse) and Richard iii (Perth Theatre). Though Sound of Yell often play large ensemble shows with as many as 10 musicians, this will be a rare duo performance with Jones on steel string guitar, tapes and electronics and Aby on viola, vocals and saw.

“Wonderfully eccentric acoustic music, composed and performed by Stevie Jones with a supporting cast of Glasgow’s alternative music luminaries. Absorbing, original and moving.” fROOTS

“Sound of Yell sound like nothing so much as the lost soundtrack to a slightly unsettling 1970s European children’s programme.” The Scotsman

“An acoustic outing of tenacious, mutable beauty.” Mojo

“Invigorating, innovative and addictive.” The Quietus

SHARRON KRAUS

Sharron Kraus is a UK-based singer, musician and songwriter whose music though informed by the folk traditions of England and Appalachia has its own distinctive voice. Heralded as one of the strongest voices in English contemporary folk, Sharron is one of the musicians focussed on in Jeanette Leech's Seasons They Change: The Story of Acid, Psych and Experimental Folk. She has released six solo albums, the first of which, Beautiful Twisted, was named by Rolling Stone Magazine in their Critics’ Top Albums of 2002. As well as her solo work, Sharron has recorded an album of traditional songs - Leaves From Off The Tree – with Meg Baird and Helena Espvall of Espers, written an album of songs to celebrate the seasons of the year – Right Wantonly A-Mumming – which was recorded with some of England’s finest traditional folk singers including Jon Boden, Fay Hield and Ian Giles – as well as recording and performing as a duo – Rusalnaia – with Ex Reverie’s Gillian Chadwick, with Tara Burke (Fursaxa) as Tau Emerald and with Irish free-folk collective United Bible Studies.

Her latest album, Joy's Reflection is Sorrow, released on Sunstone Records this year is a collection of songs written in the midst of world-wide turmoil and personal loss. As a counterweight to the impending darkness, within and around, the songs themselves, while bearing Kraus' unmistakable stamp, are more upbeat, melodic and life-affirming than her previous work.
