About this Event

Purpose

The purpose of these monthly plant walks is to encourage a deep knowing of the plants growing in and around the wild spaces of Los Angeles (Tongva land). We focus on identification, familiarization, and relationship building with edible and medicinal plants and talk about respectful foraging and harvesting, regenerative care for the land, herbalism, cooking, natural dyeing, herbal first aid, and the unique ecosystem of the wild lands of Los Angeles. This walk is open to plant lovers, seasoned naturalists, herbalists, hikers, and beginners alike.

Preparation

Please come prepared to hike 2-4 miles on uneven terrain and a dirt trail. This hike is slow, gentle, and nearly flat, with very little elevation change. We will be stopping often to talk about the plants we encounter.

Please come prepared with plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, a hat, suitable walking clothing, and a notebook and pen(cil) if you’d like to take notes as we walk.

Location

Last month we hiked along an upper section of the Arroyo Seco and this month we’ll walk along another portion. I LOVE the Arroyo Seco, the river which begins in the San Gabriel Mountains, up past Switzer Falls, and flows down past Altadena, South Pasadena, Highland Park, and Mount Washington, before joining the LA River near Elysian Park. We’ll begin walking in South Pasadena, at Arroyo Park, and walk north along the river.

Please map out this drive beforehand and make sure you know where we’re meeting. Our starting location is in the heart of Northeast LA, so please leave plenty of time for driving if you don’t live nearby and arrive BEFORE 10am, when our walk begins. I will be there at 9:45am.

The address is Arroyo Park, Stoney Drive, South Pasadena, CA 91030

You’ll know you’re in the right place if you end up in the east side of the Arroyo Seco, in a park with soccer and baseball fields, picnic tables, and bathrooms. We will meet at the north end of the park, near the bathrooms. *The closest intersection to our meeting spot is San Pascual Avenue and Stoney Drive.

Please contact me with any questions about getting to the trailhead BEFORE the day of the walk. If it’s 10am and you’re not there, we will begin the walk without you. Thank you!

*Notes

-You may bring your kids and pets for no additional charge, given they are able to walk for the entire duration of our hike.

-These walks happen rain or shine. If the weather isn’t looking great and you’d like to skip the walk, please let me know at least one day beforehand and you may transfer your payment to a future event!

-I do not offer refunds, however; if you contact me the day before the walk, you may transfer your payment to a future event. I do not offer refunds for same day cancellations.
