Absinthe—The Green Fairy: Separating Fact from Fiction
Thu, March 23, 2017, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM EDT
Absinthe was the drink of choice for many artists at the end of the 19th century. It was said to have mind-altering properties, and it was outlawed early in the 20th century and stayed that way until about 10 years ago. Absinthe is an anise-flavored, strongly alcoholic beverage (60+ percent ethanol) that also contains wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) extracts. The chemical thujone, a part of the wormwood extract, was long suspected to be responsible for the "visit of the Green Fairy." This presentation will review the history of absinthe, its preparation and its alleged mind-altering properties.
