About this event

Twelve years ago, Prospero was Duke of Milan, but his passion for the study of magic outgrew his responsibilities as Duke. Seizing upon this perceived weakness, Prospero’s bother, Antonio, usurped the kingdom and banished Prospero and his young daughter Miranda to a remote island. Since then, Prospero has ruled the island and its two inhabitants, the spirit Ariel and monster Caliban, through his magic powers. And his daughter Miranda has grown up having never encountered another human being. When Prospero divines that his enemies are close to the island, he conjures up a powerful storm which shipwrecks them. But as Prospero begins to enact his long-awaited revenge, he becomes aware of the limits of his power. The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays—and one of the last plays he wrote. Filled with magic, mystery, love, and humor, the play explores themes of power and control, and the potential of forgiveness to change everything. This production is produced by Oglethorpe University’s Theatre Program and features a cast of student performers.
