Event Details

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is proud to offer About Boating Safely.

This boat safety course is an introductory course to meet the boating education needs of recreational boaters. It fulfills the New York requirements for mandatory boater education for those born on or after May 1, 1996, as well as the requirement for personal watercraft operation. And, it is a great class for new boaters and a good refresher for all boaters. It is designed for powerboat, sailboat, personal watercraft (PWC), kayak, canoe, or standup paddleboard.

Topics include:

  • Preparations before getting underway: trailering, launching, knots
  • Navigation and the rules of the road
  • Safe operation of boat and personal watercraft
  • The legal requirements of boating
  • What to do in case of an accident or emergency
  • Considerations for waterskiing, sailing, kayaking, fishing, hunting and windsurfing

This is a NASBLA-certified, Natioanlly-recognized course.

Why learn from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary:

Professional: Classes are taught in a small class by certified US Coast Guard instructors who are also experienced boaters.

Experience: Classroom materials are base on Coast Guard experience, investigations, and studies of boating safety. They represent 228 years of U.S. Coast Guard marine experience.

Individual Support: Classes are designed to allow students to ask questions and get individualized support.

Group Instruction: Classes allow for group interaction, exchange of experiencem, and students who learn from each other.

Does this class provide an actual Boating Safety Certificate?

Yes, upon successful completion of the class and test, you will receive a Boating Safety Certificate. It is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and meets the National Boating Education Standards including those of New York State. New York State recognizes the ABS safety certificate. It allows you to operate on New York waters.

Is the ABS Boating Card recognized by other states?

For visiting boaters, all states, territories, and provinces will recognize your ABS card because it meets NASBLA requirements and Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Cards that meet Transport Canada’s requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Does the class include the test?

The eight hour class includes a teaching session and a test that will be graded in class. Upon successful class completion and passing of the test, you will immediately receive an a Boating Safety Certificate in the form of a wallet card certifying that you have successfully completed the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary About Boating Safely course.

Do I have to wait to receive the certificate and wallet card?

No. There is no waiting required. Your instructor will issue you the card immediately upon passing the test.

Ho do I access the classroom?

Enter through the double glass doors under the metal awning located just north of the Houston Street intersection and follow the stairs up to room 204 on the second floor.

Is there anything I need to prepare beforehand?

There is no need to study prior to class. We will teach you everything you need to know to get your NY Safe Boating Certificate in class. However if you would like to start learning now, there is a good set of videos published by Boat-Ed here. It's not required. We will cover all this material in class.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to complete the course?

  • You must be at least 10 years old to take this course.

  • You do not have to be a resident of New York to take this course.

  • You are not required to have a state driver’s license  however we need some way to positively identify the student’s name to issue the certificate.

  • Student must attend all eight hours of instruction and pass the test to get the certificate

What should I bring into the event?

1) Bring a lunch or snacks.  This isn't the best neighborhood for dining/deli establishments, but you can find something a few blocks east of Pier 40 if you don't bring food.

2) A pen or pencil.  (Pencil may be better, since you will be taking a multiple choice exam at the end of the class and may wish to change your answer(s).)

3) A photo ID. This is required to issue the completion certificate to the correct name.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Paid parking is located in the building. For more details see Go to for more info on public transit options.  The closest subway is the Houston St. stop on the #1 train (about a 10 minute walk away.)
