Description

AAUW Authors Day Breakfast and Silent Auction

Hosted by the Colorado Springs Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) - a must-attend annual event! Ticket deadline is Thu, Oct 22.

Our mission is to advance equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Each year, Authors Day ticket sales and the accompanying silent auction are a major source of funds for the college scholarships our branch awards.

To maximize our fundraising, we ask that you pay the convenience fee when you buy your ticket online. Thank you!

So what’s in it for you besides the chance to support our mission?

* A delish breakfast with lots of good friends.

* A chance to browse the silent auction tables and place bids on one or more fun gifts…from wine, coffee, and pampering gift baskets, to art, travel, and more. There’s something for everyone…but you’ll need to check back often to make sure a friend hasn’t upped the bid!

* The privilege to hear from three stellar Colorado authors (this year, all women) who will entertain, inform and inspire us as they talk about their journeys, their writing process and their books.

* The opportunity to purchase a signed copy of one or more of the books you’ll be hearing about…for your own library or as a holiday gift.

Our keynote author will be Colorado-based Eleanor Brown, New York Times best-selling author of The Weird Sisters (Shakespeare’s Macbeth, anyone?) and her most recent novel The Light of Paris.

Inspired by letters her grandmother had written from Paris in the 1920s, Brown delves into the lives of a grandmother, who fled to Paris to find herself as a writer, and her granddaughter, a talented painter who, in the 1990s, is trapped in a stifling marriage that has undermined her confidence and creativity. What happens when the granddaughter/ narrator finds her grandmother’s diary from Paris? Can she find the strength to live the life she was meant to have?

Our second author is Elizabeth L. Fox and her featured book We Are Going To Be Lucky: A World War II Love Story in Letters. The author provides a wonderful, intimate picture of a time (World War II era), places (Europe and the home front), and people (two, first-generation Americans separated by war), told through the vivid letters of the author’s parents, exchanged during their separation.

While many collections of wartime correspondence present only a soldier’s perspective, this fascinating book preserves the fears, hopes, dreams of both members of this couple. Carefully curated and annotated by the author, full of funny anedotes, powerful impressions and poignant struggles, this book provides a window on both a lost world and the human condition.

Our final author is Susan Joy Paul, writer of well-known Colorado guidebooks including Hiking Colorado Waterfalls, and Touring Colorado Hot Springs. When not hiking, climbing, soaking, sleeping or eating, Paul is writing! In addition to making a major splash as a guidebook author, Paul also maintains an active career as a ghostwriter, and has been the pen for hire behind a variety of best-selling business titles, as well as other non-fiction. But don’t come expecting Paul to “dish” over the sweet rolls about these book titles and their authors. As a ghostwriter, she takes confidentiality very seriously!
