AAUW Sacramento Celebrates Jane Austen
Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM (PDT)
AAUW Sacramento is partnering with the Sacramento Theater Company by buying out the last showing of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
By attending this event, you help celebrate the 200th anniversary of Austen's immortal novel "Pride and Predjudice" and support AAUW Sacramento's programming.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a hosted reception of appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages and no-host wine. A brief Prologue will be provided by STC for those who are unfamiliar or have forgotten the story. Additionally, the cast will provide audience members who wish to stay after with A Question and Answer Period.
Where does the money go?
AAUW Sacramento sponsors four very significant out-reach activities that impact the lives of women locally, around our state, and around our nation.
- Locally, our Scholarship committee presents local women with financial help to re-enter school and earn a degree or certificate.
- Locally, Speech Trek offers a speech contest to all of the students in the high schools of the Elk Grove Unified School District and students win up to $400 toward their futures.
- Around the state, we help to sponsor 8 middle school girls to attend Tech Trek summer camp, a one-week Science and Math camp at a university campus in California.
- Nationally we are funding a 100th Anniversary Educational Foundation Fellowship that celebrates the work that women of Sacramento AAUW have done since 1920.
Our dues don’t begin to cover the cost of providing so many opportunities for women and girls to break down the barriers that constrain their success. Come out and support the good work of your branch and the next 200 years of women’s civil rights, begun so elegantly by Jane Austen two hundred years ago.
