She is a professor at the University of Louisville (Kentucky), where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education and works in local schools to support effective mathematics teaching and learning.  Developing “Strong” Mathematicians: The Importance of Flexibility

with guest speaker & author Jennifer Bay-Williams

Description: We all want students who look at a problem like 308 – 299 or 3(y – 5) – 2(y – 5) = 0, and notice something about the numbers in the problem, to not just blindly apply a common strategy (e.g., regrouping over 0 or applying the distributive property). For all students to develop flexible ways of solving problems, it must be a daily priority in our mathematics classrooms! In our day together, we will explore classroom routines, questioning strategies, and tools that will provide the equipment teachers and leaders need to ensure students are becoming flexible thinkers, and thereby stronger mathematicians. Many examples will be shared, and you will have an opportunity to work with others and apply the ideas in the work you do with students and teachers. Specifically, you will: • Learn about critical components of procedural fluency built on conceptual understanding. • Explore research-based classroom practices that impact student conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. • Connect the classroom practices to your own grade/course/coaching • Learn and practice coaching skills to ensure that students and teachers engage in meaningful discourse focused on procedural fluency

Conference Registration: 8:00 am Lunch: 11:30 - 12:30 pm Conference: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
