About this event
You're invited to AAJA Seattle's #VeryAsian Lunar New Year celebration!
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) Seattle's annual Lunar New Year event is a family friendly celebration to eat, connect, and raise money for our scholarship programs that pay for professional development and training for journalists of color. This online event will feature raffle drawings and speakers.
Dumpling-plus-event tickets include packages of 22 frozen homemade dumplings from Ping’s Dumpling House in the Chinatown-International-District which will be distributed at a designated pick-up site a few days before the event. Each order will come with a special thank-you gift bag and the joy of supporting a local, Asian-American-owned business.
We’ll also give you a preview of the evening’s fantastic raffle prizes, from brewery gift cards to books and some #VeryAsian swag.
SPEAKERS
Michelle Li, AAJA Seattle member and former KING 5 anchor, now an anchor for KSDK in St. Louis, and Sunrise anchor Gia Vang from KARE 11 in Minneapolis. They’ll talk about how a very rude voice message turned into the #VeryAsian Foundation which benefited AAJA and now supports Stop AAPI Hate.
Ron Chew, author of "My Unforgotten Seattle," a Seattle historian, journalist, social justice leader and visionary of the Wing Luke Museum.
Stick around for some fun and games to get to know your new board members, fellow chapter members and guests, and take part in a conversation about what you’d like to see happen for the rest of the year.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Due to the pandemic, AAJA Seattle had to cancel its largest fundraiser, Chef’s Showcase. The Lunar New Year event will help to make up the gap. The need is great right now. It’s never been more important to have diversity in local media. From Covid to the racial justice uprisings, Asian American journalists are telling critical stories that would otherwise not be told.
These funds will help:
- Fund scholarships for local journalists of color to build the next generation
- Support programming that advances equity and inclusion in local news coverage
- Support journalists of color and keep much-needed POC voices in news and communications
- Support members who are struggling due to Covid through emergency grants
Our fundraising goal is $3,000 - thank you for helping us get there!
Excited to see you all there!
