Course description:

Our codes of professional conduct have been carefully created to provide guidance in the cases of interpreting dilemmas. Unfortunately, life doesn't always look like Best Practices dictate that it should, and we don't always do the right thing when interpersonal problems are at work or our careers are on the line. This session intends to give participants hands-on tools for addressing issues that come up while interpreting. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own dilemmas with one another. Codes of Ethics for legal and/or healthcare interpreting will be carefully reviewed, and then participants will brainstorm how to approach dilemmas differently in the future. Attendees will come away from this workshop with a better understanding of how to apply the codes of ethics in a way that makes practical sense.

About the presenter:

She lived in Honduras in 2008-2009, teaching elementary school, and then returned home to begin freelancing as a medical and court interpreter. Currently, she works as a freelance interpreter/translator and trains candidates privately for the state and federal interpreting exams. She owns her own company, Athena Sky Interpreting, where she coaches students on interpreting technique. When she is not teaching and interpreting, you may find her practicing Acroyoga or studying French.
