Event description

Description

Runaway slave ads were placed in historical newspapers in efforts to try and locate enslaved individuals who ran away from their slaveholders' plantations or to notify subscribers of runaways who had been apprehended by law enforcement. When examined collectively, the ads provide a number of details and descriptions about the persons named within them and give insight into the American slave system.

AAHGS Nashville is pleased to host local author Bill Carey as our guest speaker for our May 2019 meeting. Carey's latest book, Runaways, Coffles and Fancy Girls, is an in-depth exploration into slavery ads appearing in Tennessee newspapers. Through his study and analysis, the book covers issues of slavery in Nashville and across the state.

Mr. Carey has a professional background in journalism as a reporter for the Tennessean, Nashville Scene, WPLN, and NashvillePost.com. He is a co-founder of the non-profit website Tennessee History for Kids and author of six books. He currently writes for Tennessee Magazine.

We welcome you to attend and learn more about Carey's book and work. The meeting is FREE and open to the public.

Parking: If you are able to park along Fort Negley Boulevard between Fort Negley and the Adventure Science Center and walk to the Visitor's Center we would greatly appreciate it. This would allow the spots closest to the building to be used for those that may need it most. Thank you for your consideration.

Raffle: During the meeting, we will have a door prize raffle. Cash and cards accepted.
