Event description

Description

At the Arab American Association of New York, we have managed to build momentum, find collective strength, and hold onto hope during a tumultuous and traumatic time for Arab and Muslim communities locally and across the world. Under the current federal administration and in an ongoing era of violence and war in the Middle East and North Africa, dozens of crises with far-reaching impacts on AAANY’s community have emerged in rapid fire succession. Through this time we have avoided organizational whiplash, and our community members have risen to the occasion.

This year we would like to invite you -- our allies, our family, our community, and our friends -- to join us in a celebration that extends beyond any one of us alone. At the 17th Annual AAANY Benefit Gala, we will honor those whose work has amplified and supported our own and whose commitment to justice has made our community and our work stronger. We have a long road ahead of us, but we are so grateful to be travelling it with you.

Honorees

Shaun King - Freedom Fighter Award

Shaun King is an advocate, a journalist, and an activist whose tireless commitment to reform in the US justice system has yielded tangible and major victories across the country. His writings have inspired thousands of Americans to hold leaders accountable and to make sweeping changes in the toxic and racist culture of policing in our country.

Jews for Racial and Economic Justice - Community Champion Award

FREJ is a model of intersectional organizing in our city. Its members, staff, and leaders are fierce anti-racist organizers and stand as a strong supporter of immigrant, Arab, and Muslim organizers. They have spearheaded efforts to build solidarity between Muslims and Jews, particularly by mobilizing their members against the Muslim Ban, and have amplified the voices of their Mizrahi Caucus.

NYC Commission on Human Rights - Community Defender Award

In the face of anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab federal legislation, the NYC Commission on Human Rights has worked tirelessly to build systems of protection for our communities here in NYC. They have issued a new report on discrimination against MASA communities, the first one since 9/11, launched the I Am Muslim NYC campaign, and have developed a Combating Anti-Muslim Racism training.

Beit Hanina Cultural Center of New York - Basemah Atweh Legacy Award

The Beit Hanina Cultural Center of New York is a Bay Ridge institution, providing a home in Bay Ridge for people to gather, break fast, celebrate, and build community together. In the spirit of AAANY's co-founder Basemah Atweh, Beit Hanina's long term commitment to the Arab and Muslim community of Bay Ridge is an inspiration.
