Event description

Description

Ever wondered what alternatives there are to recycling food scraps in the North? Interested in composting using worms all year round? Excited at the prospect of building rich, fertile soil instead of purchasing it for your garden? We (Yukon Wigglers) are hosting our first workshop on worm composting! You are welcome to attend both the morning and afternoon sessions or choose to attend just one session (but we recommend going to both!). A delicious organic lunch is included in the ticket price! The ticket price is the same if you are attending one or both sessions.

10:30am - 12pm: Getting Started with Vermicomposting

Help your garden and the environment by recycling kitchen food scraps. Learn what can be vermicomposted and how to set up and maintain a successful worm bin. What type of worm do I use? How do I care for and feed the worms? How do I harvest vermicompost from the worm bin? How do I use it and what effects does vermicompost have on plants? These questions and more will be answered.

Anyone and everyone is welcome!

1pm - 2:30pm: Boost Your Soil with Vermicomposting

Learn how to use worms to turn "waste" food scraps, livestock manure, crop residues, coffee grounds/chaff, etc. into vermicompost that will increase soil health, increase crop yields, and suppress plant diseases and pests. This workshop covers the fundamental concepts of vermicompost production, including earthworm husbandry, feedstocks, pre-composting, vermicomposting methodologies and systems, harvesting techniques, and applications. Learn how to start or expand your operation, and see how others are vermicomposting around the world.

Everyone is welcome!

Our Keynote Speaker is Rhonda Sherman. She is the director of the Compost Learning Lab at North Carolina State University and a leading expert on vermicomposting. She has helped thousands of people worldwide to start or expand their vermicomposting operations. Her new book is The Worm Farmer's Handbook.
