A Walking Tour of Lower Manhattan New York City for Educators
Mon, August 7, 2017, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM EDT
When: Three avaliable date - April 22, 2017, July 10, 2017, August 7, 2017
Where: Starts at City Hall Park, Broadway, New York, NY. The exact meeting location is here on Google Maps
Description: This walking tour is designed for educators who are interested in methods to use architecture in their classrooms. As we walk the group will model seven different strategies for social studies lessons as we visit sites throughout Lower Manhattan. We will make our way to the southern tip of the island as we visit and learn about landmarks such as: The Woolworth Building, St. Paul's Chapel, The New York Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, and Bowling Green. You will get the chance to experience New York City and learn different strategies to apply architecture in your class. PD certificates will be provided for three hours of professional development.
Though we will be practicing the strategies with architecture in New York City they are designed to work with architecture from any time or place, not just NYC, in any grade level. Your class does not need to be focused on architecture and you will not need an extensive background in architecture to implement any lessons. The practices will work in any social studies class from elementary social studies, to middle school ancient history, to high school American history.
Two sites will have bathroom access and there will be a short refreshment/coffee breaking during the tour. Purchase orders can not be accepted for this program. Participants will need to be able to complete three active hours of walking with multiple sets of stairs.
What is the refund policy and bad weather policy?
48 hours are required for cancellation. If you cancel on shorter notice you will be responsible for the price of the ticket. If there is rain in the forecast the tour will be moved to the rain date, which will be the Sunday after the scheduled date. The decision will be made 48 hours in advance if necessary and participants will be contacted through Eventbrite. Cancellations and refunds will be provided at that time if a participant can not make the rain date.
Should I bring anything to the tour?
Make sure you bring comfortable shoes and something to drink. We will be outside most of the three hours so make sure you weather appropriate clothes and money incase you want to buy a drink during the break.
Can I attend the walking tour if I am not an educator or bring a friend who is not an educator?
Of course, but we prefer you save the spot for educators. We still go over interesting history and architectural facts, but the theme of the walking tour is best practices for educators so you might not find it as interesting as a more "traditional" tour.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The closest subway stations are A,C Chambers St. station, 2,3 Park Place station, R City Hall station, 4,5,6 Brooklyn Bridge Station, and J, Z Chambers St. station.
If you are coming from New Jersey you could take the PATH to World Trade station and walk to City Hall Park.
