Description

Origin of “A Walk for Education”:

A Walk for Education is a NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) event that aims to increase awareness of educational opportunities. At NSBE’s 2001 Fall Regional Conference (FRC) in Dallas, TX, members discussed declining college enrollment among African Americans. In the weeks following FRC, the idea for A Walk for Education (AWFE) was presented to the Southeast Texas chapters (The SET) by Kay Babineux of the University of Houston – Central Campus. Chapter leaders from the University of Houston – Central, Prairie View A&M University, Texas A&M University, University of Houston – Downtown, Rice University, and Lamar University responded positively to the idea. The SET hosted the first AWFE in 2002 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, serving Ward 4 of Houston, TX.
