Description

An Evening with Sir Peter Donnelly & Dr. Jill Hagenkord

As the cost of generating genomic information rapidly decreases and the aggregation of large sample collections lead us to Big Data sets it is now possible to do population based genetic studies faster than ever before. This has rapidly increased our knowledge of the genome and enabled us to build models for genetic prediction that impact a much larger proportion of the population. We are now able to substantially improve our ability to identify individuals at high risk of specific diseases much earlier and target them with clinical interventions. In addition these new genetic models have the potential to improve the interpretation of screening and diagnostic tests as well as increase the efficiency of existing screening programs.

This new understanding of genetic data has broad implications for the future of healthcare.

Join us for a conversation on this topic with Sir Peter Donnelly, founder of an unrivalled data platform for polygenic risk scoring, and Dr. Jill Hagenkord, an expert in population health, patient engagement & medical diligence for health tech.

Speaker bios

Sir Peter Donnelly

Professor Peter Donnelly is a founder and CEO of Genomics plc. Until recently he was also Director of the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford. Peter is an international leader in human statistical genetics and has played a leading role over the last 15 years in the explosion of our knowledge of genetic variants associated with human diseases and traits. He has been centrally involved in the major national and international genetics projects including the HapMap project (the successor to the human genome project) and the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (a large international consortium studying the genetic basis of more than 20 common human diseases and conditions in over 60,000 people).

Genomics plc has developed an unrivalled data platform which links genetic variation at 14M positions in the human genome with over 10,000 traits, from disease outcomes and health measurements through to molecular phenotypes. The company has developed and applied breakthrough algorithms based on statistics and machine learning to reveal novel insights into human biology to transform drug discovery and the delivery of healthcare.

Dr. Jill Hagenkord

Dr. Hagenkord is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of MDisrupt, a firm specializing in medical diligence and consulting services for health tech investors and startups. Jill is a board-certified pathologist with subspecialty boards in molecular genetic pathology and a fellowship in pathology/oncology informatics. Her expertise is in health product strategy, coding/coverage/reimbursement of medical products, medical and regulatory affairs, health policy, clinical laboratory medicine, molecular diagnostics, population health, provider education, patient engagement, and medical diligence for health tech.

Dr. Hagenkord serves on a number of medical professional societies as an active member in the Association for Molecular Pathology, the College of American Pathologists, American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health. Jill received her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1999, did residency training at the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Iowa, and completed fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Subsequently, Dr. Hagenkord practiced pathology at Creighton University Medical Center where she founded iKaryos Diagnostics. Jill was previously the Chief Medical Officer at Color Genomics, 23andMe, Invitae, and Complete Genomics. More details on Jill’s experience can be found here.
