A Virtual Outing: Peregrine Wander
Event Information
About this Event
Take wing on a virtual nature hike to view the cliffs and caves of Castle Rock, nesting site of the peregrine falcon. We’ll explain the peregrines' natural history and the ongoing efforts by volunteers of the Mount Diablo Peregrine Falcon Group to preserve and protect the falcons' nesting area high in the cliffs above Pine Canyon.
Our virtual route follows a venerable road used by stage coaches 150 years ago to reach the historic Mountain House on Mount Diablo. On the way, we’ll view spectacular Castle Rocks and the enigmatic China Wall formation, separated by just a few miles on the trail but a vast 35 million years in geologic time. We’ll return via the Globe Lily Trail, named for a rare flower found only around Mount Diablo and first collected by David Douglas (and his botanical dog Billy) in 1831.
