Event description

Description

A new Christmas tradition is taking place in a spectacular native rainforest above Hilo. The Natural Area Reserve System, the Three Mountain Alliance, and the Hawai‘i Audobon Society is once again teaming up to host "A Very Merry Christmas Bird Count" in Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve!

Join us, on December 17 for a chance to meet some of Hawai‘iʻs common and endangered native birds! Volunteers will team up with a seasoned birder who will showcase the native birds and plants found in Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve! Volunteers will participate in tallying up the birds seen and the results will be used as a guide to create conservation strategies to protect the birds and their habitat, and to understand the long-term health of bird populations.

After birding, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in helping to restore degraded forests by planting native trees! A pot-luck lunch will be ejoyed under tents bordering the forest where we will get to see the results of the Count as well as enjoy other festive activities.

Event fees will be donated to the Hawai‘i Audubon Society. To learn more about the Hawai‘i Audubon Society visit: www.hawaiiaudubon.org

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with over 100 years of citizen science involvement. It is an early-winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the US, Canada and many countries in the Western Hemisphere, go out over a 24 hour period on one calendar day to count birds.
